:: Color change ::
About this technique
Changing colours in crochet can be tricky at first, but once you understand where and how to switch yarn, it becomes easy… and makes your projects look so much tidier.
In this tutorial I’ll show you how I make a clean colour change in crochet, step by step. You’ll learn when to change the yarn and two simple ways to make the join look neat (or at least less noticeable 😅).
To change to a different colour we need to make the change one stitch before the one that needs to be worked in a new colour… this keeps it tidy. For this, we change colour on the last yarn over of the last stitch before the new colour is used.

We can make the next stitch in two different ways, and each one will make the colour change look a little different:
Option 1 – Make a SC (US) / DC (UK)
This is the most common option and the one that works best when we want to add a small detail or colour accent in the middle of our work.

Option 2 – Make a slip stitch in the back loop
This option makes the colour change look a little neater, for people who don’t like the visible seam that Option 1 leaves. The difference is minimal, but since it’s easy to do, I think it’s worth it. If you don’t mind visible joins, I really admire you… I would love not to care about it! 😄

Both methods work great, so try them and see which one you like better. Once you find your favourite, changing colours will feel much less intimidating. Happy crocheting! 💚
